Marriage: Everyday Choices Matter

Great marriages are a lot of good, hard work, every day. This is not because love isn’t powerful enough to overcome bad odds, but because Love IS WORTH the effort!  DAILY EFFORT! Diligent care in the everyday matters and personal choices that we live out will ultimately make the difference between success and failure in a marriage. The good news: each seemingly insignificant day of new, healthy choices and actions can turn into a very significant turn-around for a marriage.  Even a marriage headed for divorce can go from mediocrity to the most wonderfully intimate relationship when both husband and wife make daily marriage decisions to build rather than destroy. How will you will treat each other daily? Two great tips for starting off or rebuilding on the right foot:

  • Forgive Daily- Do not let the sun go down on your anger, Ephesians 4:26.  Each day, value your marriage more than your “right to be right.”  When both spouses are committed to working things out before going to sleep, resentments are not able to build in the soil provided by grudges and guilt.

  • Keep No Record of Wrongs- So many people keep a record of the wrongs that their spouse has done to them.  It’s like they have a chalkboard of tally marks for the various offenses that they need to remember just so their spouse won’t get one over on them someday.  The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 13 that that is not what LOVE does.   After you’ve kissed and made-up, bringing up a wrong committed last year, last decade, or before you met is really just not wise.  (Of course, if you are being abused or your spouse has had some major issues as with adultery, drugs, gambling, etc…, there is a need for accountability and outside help, where issues need to be addressed and corrected.  This is not necessarily keeping a record of wrongs but of making wrongs right).
