Salvation: How to/the Basics

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10:9).

It is really that simple to be saved.

Here are the basics: God created the world and human beings because He wanted relationship with us.  Just like in human relationships, God wants people to love Him for Him and who He is, not because He “makes” them love Him.  So, God gave people “free will” to decide if they would choose to love Him or not, serve Him or not, listen to Him or not.

People decided to go their own way, starting in the Garden of Eden, when Satan, the opposite of God, tempted them to be wise in their own knowledge by going against a safety guideline that God had designed.  You see, God told Adam and Eve not to eat fruit from a certain tree.  The tree was there, I believe, because human choice was there.  Yet, God loved the first humans enough to be direct and tell them to stay away from that tree.  Sadly, human choice chose to do the opposite, and sin entered the world.  What is sin?  Anything that is contrary to God and His design.

Sin, death, hardship, pain, destruction, evil, and all of the things contrary to God’s design for what He wants for us, entered the world.  “Why do bad things happen when God can just stop it?” People ask.  “Why would God allow that horrible thing to happen?” People ask.  God didn’t cause these things.  He gave human’s choice.  Human’s chose to sin.  Sin caused these things.

Yet, God loves us so much that He did not want to leave humans with no hope or way of redemption.  Yes, humans made wrong choices, but God wanted to make a way for humans to get back into right relationship with Him and to make a choice that would right every wrong…the choice of salvation.

To do this, God sent his son, Jesus.  Jesus came to earth as a baby and lived a human life, but he was both fully-God and fully-human.  He was sinless.  He was the only way, God in human form, to bridge the gap created by sin so that we can be brought back into relationship with God and restored to God’s original intent for us…His goodness, blessings, mercy, kindness, favor, joy, true love and acceptance, relationship with Him.

God wants us to have relationship with Him, that is why He created us in the first place.  Since human choice brought sin into the world, and God loves humans so much, He decided to offer humans a way to choose Him again, to be released from sin and death again, and the only way that was powerful enough to right the wrongs was to give humans another choice through the most powerful and loving act God could do.

Through the blood sacrifice of Jesus, who paid the penalty for our sins (and the sins of all man-kind for all time) through death on the cross and overcoming sin and death by rising again (the Resurrection/why we celebrate Easter), relationship with God Himself was able to be restored.  We can directly go to God through Jesus, who made the way for us again.  The only thing that we need to do is to believe that Jesus is Lord of our lives.

Simply tell God that you believe He is who He said He is, and ask for the forgiveness of your sins through Jesus.  Ask Jesus to come into your heart, into your life, and to save you.

Then, let Him lead you.  Some ways to do this are by reading the Bible, finding a healthy church to go to, praying to him….talking and listening to God, seeking out healthy mentors who can help you in your journey.

I don’t really know where you are right now in your life.  Maybe you are seeking answers. Maybe you’ve been to church, and it was overwhelming.  Maybe you’ve fallen away from God or have gotten into a lifestyle that you know isn’t working for you. Maybe you’ve seen someone who loves with all their heart and seems to have “something” you are missing. Maybe you’ve got a “crazy” relative who is always hounding you about how you need to be “saved,” but they scare you because you don’t want to become a “weirdo” like that.  Maybe you’ve been hurt by so-called Christians or think Christians are hypocritical.  Maybe you are broken inside and just need a way to healing.  Here is the good news.  God sees you.

No matter what churches or people have done or not done.  No matter what churches or people have done right or done wrong.  No matter where you are or what you have done right or done wrong.  The truth is that God loves you.  He loves each of us, and we all need Him.  He is the one who works out our kinks and refines us into much better versions of ourselves, even after “getting saved.”  The Christian walk is a lifelong process of letting God heal, restore, lead, refine, empower, and recreate us.
